What Duolingo Can Teach Us About Better Employee Training

Duolingo is effective for a simple reason: learners don’t have to wait to find out whether they are on the right track. They answer a question, receive feedback immediately, make an adjustment, and try again. That quick feedback loop keeps the learning active and gives people a chance to correct mistakes before those mistakes turn into habits.

Employee training often works very differently. Someone completes a module, finishes an assessment, and may not receive feedback until much later. By then, the details are no longer fresh, and the learner may have already moved on. The problem is not always the quality of the feedback. Sometimes it is simply arriving too late to be useful.

A better approach is to move feedback closer to practice. When employees know what they did well, what needs to change, and what to try next while they are still learning, they can improve more quickly and build confidence along the way. Feedback becomes part of the learning process instead of something that happens after it.

The goal is not to eliminate mistakes. Mistakes are a normal part of learning. The goal is to turn them into chances to improve by creating a simple cycle: practice, feedback, adjust, try again, and improve.

To help put this idea into practice, I created a free Immediate Feedback Blueprint. It walks you through choosing one employee task, identifying where feedback currently happens, evaluating whether it is timely and specific, and planning how learners will get another chance to practice.
